    MARK MILSOME FOUNDATION CALLS FOR
CULTURAL CHANGE IN FILM AND TV INDUSTRY

The 5th anniversary of Mark Milsome’s tragic death on set approaches and “Nothing has changed” says MMF’s Chair Samantha Wainstein.

As the 5th anniversary of the tragic on-set death of respected British cameraman Mark Milsome approaches on 18th November 2022, Samantha Wainstein, Chair of MMF, the charitable foundation set up in his name, has called for long overdue cultural change to protect crews working in the British film and television industry:

Mark was unnecessarily killed whilst filming a car stunt on location in Ghana in 2017. Five years have passed during which time nothing has changed to improve crew safety - we are marking this tragic date by demanding mandatory health and safety education for all crew working in Film and TV.”

The Foundation is asking for the industry establishment, including BECTU, PACT, PGGB, and all industry guilds, to unite to create lasting change. Since its inception, MMF has had continual dialogue with crew. In 2020, it commissioned a detailed survey to gauge opinion on their working conditions and then created a Health and Safety Passport course in 2021. Whilst individual crew have responded positively to the course, as far as the established industry goes, nothing has changed.

“The powers that be can’t just treat policy on health and safety along with the wellbeing of their crews as a box-ticking exercise,” says Mark Milsome’s widow Andra. “The overall culture on sets needs to change for good. We are using the 5th anniversary as a call to action and I would like to echo the wise words of our esteemed patron, Rory Kinnear, whose own father Roy died on set: ‘No-one should die for the sake of a shot.’”

MMF will launch Black T-Week on 18th November, when film and television crews across the UK will honour their late colleague by wearing black T-shirts exclusively designed by celebrated cinematographer Benoit Delhomme. Benoit and Mark worked together on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Theory of Everything and he has kindly lent his passion and talent to this important MMF initiative, creating a design with the simple yet powerful words, “Because Mark” and “Inspire Change”.

    JEAN-MARIE LAVALOU (1946-2022) OBITUARY
Whenever a Camera Operator sits in front of remote handwheels, just think, the inventors were the first to do it – almost 50 years ago!
LOUMA CRANES are known throughout the world as the original and most versatile remote camera cranes used in the film and television industry.  This was acknowledged in 2005 when AMPAS awarded the Louma Crane inventors  – DAVID SAMUELSON BSC, GBCT; ALAIN MASSERON and JEAN-MARIE LAVALOU – with an Oscar.

And for decades now, ADAM SAMUELSON GBCT has consistently contributed to the updates and improvements that have helped the Louma Crane evolve successfully.  He sent the attached Obituary for Jean-Marie for you to read here: Jean_Marie_Lavalou_Obitury.pdf.

MARK MILSOME FOUNDATION ONLINE HEALTH & SAFETY COURSE

Thanks to the generous support of the MMF, all those who get through to the GBCT Camera Trainee course itself are provided with an H&S and a First Aid course free.

But if you are a GBCT Member, if you are in the industry, and you haven’t yet completed the H&S course, please take it and help to make the industry a safer place.  Tell everyone you know about it and give them the information below.

The course covers the issues that the MMF believe failed Mark Milsome in Ghana in November 2017.  It includes the areas identified by over 2000 crew who responded to the MMF survey last year, many of whom were GBCT members.
It takes only 90 minutes to complete – please do it.

You will receive a 5-Year Production Safety Passport recognised industry-wide from ScreenSkills.

The course is available at https://www.mmfonlinetraining.com or via https://www.markmilsomefoundation.com/healthandsafety/  for a fee of £20 plus VAT.

All profits have been gifted to the Mark Milsome Foundation, Mark’s wife, Daughter and Parents.

"Mark would still be with us today if this course had existed in 2017.  I strongly urge all crew and, very importantly, production, to take this course and make the industry a safer place. Do it for your families, for your colleagues and for Mark. This absolutely should become an industry standard”.

    (Andra Milsome)
